Details: Prepare patent landscapes in current and adjacent technology domains and markets, for early innovation personnel and Research & Development (R&D) leaders, and ideation sessions. Organize and lead forward-looking patenting workshops with R&D. Assist with early innovation ideation and technology ideation sessions, to solicit and capture ideas, develop technology concepts related thereto, and pursue related intellectual property (IP) protection. Work with strategic marketing to understand clinical trends to assist in such ideation sessions and workshops, and in ranking and protecting ideas. Conduct searches and analysis of patents, and academic and scientific literature, in the healthcare industry, as well as adjacent non-healthcare industries. Work with R&D’s early innovation personnel and senior engineers (and the professors, students, scientists, and technical experts they partner with in academia and industry) to conduct in-depth evaluation of technologies and innovations, identify trends, and analyze where technologies and inventors are most likely heading in the future. Critique early stage and uncertain innovations, and those from adjacent and peripheral technology fields, with focus on intellectual property protection. Provide input on value of technologies from both a technical and an intellectual property point of view. Maintain current knowledge of work performed by engineering groups and early innovation teams at Hill-Rom, as well as array of concepts in innovation and IP databases, and product design and technical information regarding historical products of company and competitors. Assist in coordinating visibility of submitted ideas between R&D and IP departments, and assist both groups in evaluating and pursuing ideas. Prepare patent applications and responses to Office Actions from U.S. Patent Office as assigned for Hill-Rom patent matters and assist intellectual property attorneys with legal matters as requested. Obtain initial and subsequent disclosures from inventors. Obtain or develop patent drawings and prepare patent applications. Prepare information disclosure statements, develop responses to Office Actions, supervise foreign patent application filings, and conduct all other necessary patent preparation, filing, and prosecution tasks for assigned U.S. and foreign patent matters. Communicate status of patent matters to inventors, peers, and supervisors as needed. Maintain current knowledge of developing issues in intellectual property field, including as they relate to early stage innovation, and provide education and advice to engineers, early innovation personnel, R&D, strategic marketing, management and other employees. Provide education and advice to Hill-Rom employees regarding patent requirements and procedure. Assist with continuous improvement of IP and R&D processes and strategies related to invention disclosure generation and processing, innovation analysis and ranking, and patent application filing. Position will report to IP attorney in Legal Department’s IP group, with dotted line reporting to early stage innovation leader in R&D department.
